Terra Luna Classic (LUNC)

Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) is the original Terra blockchain that launched in April 2019 as a Proof of Stake network built on the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint consensus. The chain originally hosted the algorithmic stablecoin UST and its sister governance and staking token LUNA, designed to keep UST pegged to the US dollar through a mint and burn mechanism. After the catastrophic UST depeg in May 2022 wiped out tens of billions in market value, the Terra ecosystem hard forked. The new chain launched as Terra 2.0 with a fresh LUNA token, while the original network was renamed Terra Classic and its native asset rebranded from LUNA to LUNC.

Following the fork, Terra Classic became a fully community-driven project with no involvement from the original founding team. Validators, developers, and token holders coordinate through on-chain governance to decide protocol upgrades, treasury spending, and ecosystem direction. The most significant post-fork change was the introduction of a 1.2 percent on-chain burn tax on every LUNC transfer, designed to permanently reduce supply over time. The community has also reactivated the network’s smart contract layer, ported a number of decentralized exchanges and lending protocols to the chain, and continues to pursue parity upgrades with the modern Cosmos stack.

LUNC remains an actively traded asset with a circulating supply in the trillions and a market capitalization that fluctuates around the lower mid-cap range. The token is used to pay network fees, stake with validators for rewards, and vote on governance proposals. The original UST stablecoin still exists on chain as USTC and trades far below its intended peg. While Terra Classic no longer has the institutional backing or development resources of its successor chain, it retains an active validator set, a vocal community, and ongoing trading volume across major centralized and decentralized exchanges.
