WETC (WETC)

Wrapped Ether (WETC) is a tokenized version of Ethereum Classic’s ETC asset. It is a non-custodial smart contract that allows users to trade ETC for other ERC-20 tokens on decentralized platforms, such as Ethereum Classic’s flagship decentralized exchange, ETCswap. WETC is essential for consistent token trading as it represents a standardized format for every token being traded, ensuring tokens are not lost in translation.

ETC, the native currency of Ethereum Classic, was built on the Ethereum Classic blockchain before the ERC-20 standard existed. To enable trading with alt tokens on decentralized platforms, ETC needs to be wrapped into WETC. This trade happens through a non-custodial smart contract, where ETC is exchanged for equal WETC. The process can be reversed through the “unwrap” process, where WETC is traded back for plain ETC.

Wrapped Ether simplifies trading and ensures compatibility between different tokens on Ethereum Classic. It is part of the Canonical WETC Initiative, which aims to create a unified WETC token.
