What is Milkomeda?

Milkomeda is a blockchain interoperability protocol that brings EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) capabilities to non-EVM Layer 1 blockchains. It operates as a Layer 2 solution, enabling developers to write and deploy Solidity smart contracts on chains that do not natively support them, without having to learn new programming languages or tooling.

The protocol was developed by dcSpark, whose co-founders include Nicolas Arqueros, Sebastien Guillemot, and Robert Kornacki. Milkomeda launched its first deployment as the C1 sidechain on Cardano, using MilkADA as the base asset for gas fees, and later expanded to Algorand with the A1 Rollup, which uses mALGO for fees. The Algorand Foundation supported the A1 launch through a SupaGrant. Investors in the project include Arrington Capital, Coinbase, Circle, Hypersphere, and Archetype.

By connecting non-EVM chains to an EVM-compatible Layer 2 via a permissionless bridge, Milkomeda allows developers to port existing Ethereum-based decentralised applications across ecosystems. Supported use cases include DeFi, NFT platforms, DAOs, and blockchain gaming. The project is also designed to serve as a foundation for Layer 3 solutions leveraging zero-knowledge technology.
