What is Finney?

Finney was a blockchain-enabled smartphone designed and manufactured by Sirin Labs, an Israeli hardware company. The device launched in November 2018 following a token sale in late 2017 that raised approximately $157 million through the SRN token. Named after early Bitcoin contributor Hal Finney, the phone was positioned as the first consumer device built specifically around secure cryptocurrency use.

At its core, the Finney smartphone included a cold-storage crypto wallet embedded in a dedicated secure enclave, physically separated from the Android environment by a sliding security switch. When the switch was closed, the secure element was isolated from the network entirely, providing hardware-level protection for private keys. The device ran Sirin OS, a hardened version of Android with built-in blockchain services, and offered a dCENTER suite covering encrypted messaging, secure file sharing, and decentralized application access.

Sirin Labs also announced a companion product called the Finney All-in-One PC, a desktop unit incorporating the same secure wallet architecture, intended for users who preferred a non-mobile form factor.

The Finney ecosystem was designed around the SRN token, which was used for in-app purchases and token conversions within the device. Native support focused on Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, consistent with Sirin Labs’ use of the Ethereum network for its token economy.

Sales of the Finney phone fell well short of projections, and Sirin Labs announced significant layoffs in early 2019, cutting roughly half its workforce. The company struggled to sustain operations, and the Finney project was effectively wound down. The official website at sirinlabs.com is no longer accessible, and the product is no longer available or supported.
