Jaxx

Jaxx was a non-custodial, multi-currency cryptocurrency wallet developed by Decentral Inc., a Toronto-based blockchain company founded in 2014 by Ethereum co-founder Anthony Di Iorio. The original Jaxx wallet launched in beta in early 2016 and surpassed one million downloads by January 2017. In 2018, Decentral relaunched it as Jaxx Liberty, adding a unified portfolio dashboard, an in-app news feed, block explorers, and expanded asset support.

Jaxx Liberty was a hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet that generated a fresh address per transaction and secured funds with a 12-word backup seed phrase stored solely on the user’s device. Decentral never held private keys or seed phrases. The wallet ran on eight platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and browser extensions, and included a built-in ShapeShift integration for in-app asset swaps.

At its peak, Jaxx Liberty supported over 80 digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Ethereum Classic, Zcash, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and a broad range of ERC-20 tokens. In June 2017, the earlier Jaxx Classic version suffered a vulnerability on rooted Android devices that led to an estimated $400,000 in user losses, an incident that drove the more security-focused Jaxx Liberty redesign.

On March 7, 2023, Decentral announced that Jaxx Liberty would be retired on March 27, 2023, to redirect its team and infrastructure toward Andiami: The Quest for Liberty, a node-decentralization and peer-to-peer internet initiative. All transactions were disabled at 8:00 AM ET on March 27, 2023. Users could view their seed phrase for a limited period after shutdown but could no longer send or receive funds. Decentral directed users to migrate to Edge Wallet or Exodus Wallet. The jaxx.io website is no longer active.
