The Ledger Cryptosteel Capsule Solo is a stainless steel seed phrase backup device designed to protect a 24-word BIP39 recovery phrase from fire, water, and physical damage. It is a backup accessory sold through the Ledger shop, not a hardware wallet itself. Storing a recovery phrase in durable metal ensures that access to a hardware wallet’s funds can be restored even if the device is lost or destroyed.

The capsule body is made from AISI 303 stainless steel, while the core, separators, character tiles, and fasteners use AISI 304 stainless steel. The assembly is fireproof up to 1,400°C (2,500°F), waterproof under pressures up to 150,000N, and shockproof. These properties make it significantly more resilient than paper-based recovery sheets in the event of a house fire, flood, or similar disaster.

Assembly works by sliding character tiles onto the central core, one word at a time, using only the first four letters of each BIP39 word. Separators are placed between words for clarity. Once all tiles are in place, a fastener locks the stack and a screw cap seals the capsule. The kit includes over 800 character tiles, giving ample characters to encode any standard 12- or 24-word recovery phrase. Assembled dimensions are 255 x 185 x 25 mm and the unit weighs approximately 515g.

The Cryptosteel Capsule Solo is compatible with all Ledger hardware wallets as well as any other device that uses a standard BIP39 mnemonic phrase. As of 2025, the product is listed as out of stock on the Ledger shop and is no longer featured in the active accessories lineup.
