What is Metamask?

MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet developed by ConsenSys, first released in 2016 as a browser extension and later expanded to iOS and Android. With more than 100 million users globally and over five billion transactions processed since 2021, it is the most widely used EVM-compatible wallet. Users retain full control of their private keys; MetaMask never holds funds on their behalf.

Custody: self-custodial.

The wallet supports Ethereum and all major EVM-compatible networks, plus Bitcoin and Solana. Core functions include:

  • Buying, selling, swapping, sending, and receiving tokens and NFTs
  • Staking
  • Access to decentralized applications
  • MetaMask Snaps: community-built plugins adding non-EVM connectivity, custom security alerts, and account management tools

Supported networks:

  • Ethereum
  • Arbitrum
  • Optimism
  • Base
  • Polygon
  • BNB Chain
  • Avalanche
  • Linea
  • Bitcoin
  • Solana
  • Dozens of additional EVM-compatible networks

MetaMask Portfolio provides a cross-chain dashboard for tracking balances, positions, and DeFi activity across all connected accounts and networks. The MetaMask Card is a Mastercard-backed crypto debit card accepted at over 150 million merchants worldwide, available in more than 50 regions. A free virtual card and a paid Metal card (199 USD per year, currently US only) are offered, with one percent and three percent cashback respectively. Supported spending tokens include USDC, USDT, and wETH across Linea, Solana, Base, and Monad.

ConsenSys, MetaMask’s parent company, carried out significant workforce reductions in 2023 and 2024 as part of broader restructuring. MetaMask continued active development through this period, adding Bitcoin and Solana support and launching the card product in 2024 and 2025. Security features include phishing alerts, frontrun protection, and Wallet Guard integration.
