Deutsch Ordinals is a protocol created by Casey Rodarmor in January 2023 that enables inscribing data (images, text, video) directly onto individual satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin). This effectively brings NFT-like functionality to the Bitcoin blockchain without requiring smart contracts. Each inscription is permanently stored on-chain, making Bitcoin Ordinals fully decentralized. The protocol sparked significant debate within the Bitcoin community about block space usage.
