What is BitBox?

BitBox is a hardware wallet product line developed by Shift Crypto AG, a company based in Switzerland. The wallets store private keys offline on the device, keeping them isolated from internet-connected systems. The accompanying BitBoxApp runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and both models support Android via USB. The newer BitBox02 Nova also connects to iPhone and iPad over Bluetooth.

The lineup currently includes two models: the BitBox02 and the BitBox02 Nova. Both are available in a Bitcoin-only edition and a Multi edition. The Bitcoin-only edition runs dedicated firmware that omits all non-Bitcoin code, reducing the attack surface for users who hold only Bitcoin. The Nova features a glass OLED display, an EAL6+ certified secure chip, and Bluetooth connectivity, while the standard BitBox02 uses USB-C and a conventional OLED display. All firmware is fully open-source, and the devices have undergone independent security audits.

Both devices use a microSD card for backup and recovery, alongside a standard 12 or 24-word recovery phrase. The design is compact at 54.5 x 25.4 x 9.6 mm and weighs 12 grams. A dual-chip architecture combines a general microcontroller with a dedicated secure element for key storage.

Supported networks:

  • Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Cardano natively via the BitBoxApp
  • EVM-compatible networks: Polygon, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Fantom
  • Over 1,500 ERC-20 tokens
  • DeFi applications and DApps via WalletConnect

The Bitcoin-only edition supports Bitcoin exclusively.
