What is Ledger Nano X?

The Ledger Nano X is a self-custody hardware wallet produced by Ledger SAS, a French company founded in 2014. Private keys are generated and stored on the device inside a Secure Element chip (ST33J2M0, CC EAL5+ certified) and never leave the hardware. Transactions require physical confirmation on the device, so a remote attacker cannot move funds even if the paired computer or phone is compromised.

The Nano X connects via Bluetooth 5.2 to iOS 14+ and Android 10+ smartphones and to desktop computers, and also supports USB-C for wired use. This makes it one of the few hardware wallets with full mobile support without an OTG adapter. The device has a small OLED display (128×64 pixels), two navigation buttons, a built-in battery, and can hold up to 100 coin apps at once. Chromebooks are not supported.

Compatible platforms:

  • Windows 10/11
  • macOS Monterey and later
  • Ubuntu LTS 20.04/22.04
  • iOS 14+ and Android 10+

Ledger Live, the companion app for desktop and mobile, handles asset management, buying, swapping, and staking of coins such as ETH, SOL, and ADA. It integrates over 50 service providers and connects to third-party wallets including MetaMask, Phantom, and Rabby Wallet across 90+ chains. The Nano X supports over 15,000 coins and tokens, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Avalanche, BNB, Tron, and thousands of ERC-20 tokens via Ledger Live integrations.

In 2023 Ledger launched Ledger Recover, an optional paid backup service provided by Coincover. It splits the Secret Recovery Phrase into three encrypted fragments held by three independent parties: Coincover, Ledger, and EscrowTech. The announcement drew community criticism over the principle of a seed phrase leaving the device in any form. Ledger confirmed it is strictly opt-in and has no effect on users who do not subscribe.
