What is WalletConnect?

WalletConnect is an open communication protocol that enables secure connections between cryptocurrency wallets and decentralized applications (dApps). It is not a wallet itself. It provides relay infrastructure and SDK tooling that allows any compatible wallet to communicate with any compatible dApp, without either side needing to know the other’s implementation details.

The protocol encrypts payloads end-to-end using a shared key negotiated between the two peers. Connections are established by scanning a QR code or following a deep link that encodes a standard WalletConnect URI. Version 2 of the protocol replaced the original bridge-server model, added multi-chain session support, and extended compatibility beyond EVM networks to include Solana and Bitcoin.

The developer tooling side of WalletConnect was rebranded as Reown, which provides two primary SDKs. AppKit (formerly Web3Modal) targets dApp developers and handles wallet connection, social login, onramp, swap, and multichain transaction flows. WalletKit targets wallet developers, enabling any wallet to integrate WalletConnect session handling with one SDK and connect to over 80,000 applications across supported chains.

The underlying relay network is formalized as the WalletConnect Network, operated by 20+ independent node operators. Its native token, WCT (launched in 2024), is used for staking, governance, fee distribution, and operator rewards. The network connects 700+ wallets to over 80,000 apps across EVM-compatible chains, Solana, and Bitcoin.
