What is Fortmatic?
Fortmatic is a developer-focused wallet SDK that enables users to access Ethereum-based decentralized applications without browser extensions or seed phrases. Instead of traditional crypto onboarding, it authenticates users via a phone number or email address, abstracting away private key management through a delegated non-custodial architecture backed by hardware security modules.
Founded in 2018 by Sean Li and co-founders in San Francisco, California, the company raised a $4 million seed round led by Placeholder with participation from Lightspeed Ventures, SV Angel, Social Capital, and Naval Ravikant. The SDK integrates as a drop-in web3 provider, allowing applications already using MetaMask to switch with minimal code changes.
In 2020 the company rebranded to Magic (magic.link), broadening the platform beyond Ethereum to support over 30 blockchain networks including Solana and Bitcoin. Under the Magic brand the product expanded to a full authentication and embedded wallet service for both Web3 and Web2 applications.
