What is IBM Blockchain?
IBM Blockchain is the blockchain division of IBM, offering enterprise-grade distributed ledger technology products and services built primarily on Hyperledger Fabric, an open-source permissioned blockchain framework that IBM co-developed and contributed to the Linux Foundation. The division provides tools, cloud services, and consulting to help businesses design, deploy, and operate private blockchain networks.
IBM was one of the founding contributors to the Hyperledger project in 2016 and launched its IBM Blockchain Platform as a cloud service in 2017. The platform targets industries including supply chain, financial services, healthcare, and trade finance, with notable enterprise deployments such as a food traceability system built for Walmart and a global trade digitization platform developed with Maersk. Key technical features include smart contract support, multi-cloud deployment, hardware security module key protection, and permissioned network management.
In 2025, IBM expanded its offerings with IBM Digital Asset Haven, a platform developed in partnership with digital wallet infrastructure provider Dfns. The product is aimed at banks, governments, and regulated enterprises and supports custody, transaction orchestration, and settlement across more than 40 public and private blockchains, integrating IBM Z and LinuxONE infrastructure with multi-party computation custody technology.
