What is Quorum?
ConsenSys Quorum is an open-source enterprise Ethereum protocol layer that enables organizations to build permissioned and public blockchain networks on Ethereum infrastructure. It was originally developed by JPMorgan Chase and acquired by ConsenSys in 2020, following which JPMorgan made a strategic investment in ConsenSys.
The platform serves financial institutions, insurers, and enterprise consortia that require privacy controls, permissioned access, and EVM compatibility. It offers two core Ethereum clients: GoQuorum, designed for private permissioned networks, and Hyperledger Besu, which supports both public Ethereum mainnet and permissioned deployments. A private transaction manager called Tessera handles confidential transactions between network participants.
Key technical properties include no gas fees, multiple consensus mechanisms (Raft, Istanbul BFT, Clique PoA), high transaction throughput, and smart contract support via the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Documented users span trade finance, insurance, luxury goods provenance, and financial infrastructure sectors. ConsenSys is headquartered in the United States.
