Torus
What is Torus?
Torus Labs is a Singapore-based blockchain infrastructure company specializing in non-custodial key management and authentication for Web3 applications. Its core technology uses distributed key generation and threshold cryptography to allow users to access crypto wallets and decentralized applications through familiar social logins such as Google or Facebook, without requiring seed phrases or manual private key management.
The company is the developer behind Web3Auth, an authentication SDK adopted by wallet providers and decentralized application developers. Torus Labs rebranded its developer-facing products under the Web3Auth name in January 2022, following a Series A funding round of $13 million led by Sequoia Capital India. Applications using its infrastructure include Binance Extension Wallet, Kukai, and Skyweaver.
The underlying tKey protocol splits a user’s private key into multiple shares distributed across the Torus network and the user’s own devices. Recovery requires a threshold of shares, combining factors such as social account authentication, device storage, and an optional recovery password. Supported blockchains include Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, and Binance Smart Chain.
